MARCH OF DIMES "BE A SUPER HERO FOR BABIES" AUCTION STARTS FRIDAY MAY 1ST

I am so excited about being a part of another
"BE A SUPER HERO FOR BABIES" AUCTION for the MARCH OF DIMES!

Steve Frank from the March of Dimes asked me to let everyone know that the auctions for our "Be a Superhero for Babies" cards will begin on Friday May 1st on eBay.

As I'm in the process of moving, I was limited on time, but I managed to find some practice samples on my personal sketch cards (shown above) which I donated to be included in the auctions!

I asked Steve a few quick questions:

HOW MANY CARDS WILL GO UP FOR AUCTION ON FRIDAY MAY 1ST?

"I will probably do 250 to start and place 50 more on every three days for the next ten days after"

HOW LONG WILL THE AUCTIONS LAST?

"These are seven day auctions"

HOW MANY CARDS DID YOU RECEIVE FROM ARTISTS IN TOTAL?

"I am still getting them, but I think it will be over 750 cards"

DO ALL OF THE PROCEEDS GO TO THE MARCH OF DIMES?

"Yes, after eBay and PayPal fees. I am footing the bill for postage and mailing supplies."

So good luck to everyone who participated with cards, good luck to those trying to win an auction, and most of all, good luck to Steve and the March of Dimes!

TOPPS TERMINATOR SALVATION MOVIE CARDS SET~ARTIST FEATURE DENISE VASQUEZ

I truly feel priviledged to be amongst the many AMAZING artists that illustrated sketch cards for the TOPPS TERMINATOR SALVATION movie card set!

As soon as I got approval from Topps to post the sketch cards I illustrated, seeing that there was no forum for the TERMINATOR SALVATION SET on Scoundrel, I decided to start a topic forum about this set.

I was sooooo excited about sharing the illustrations I created for this set & I knew other artists would be just as enthusiastic!

Many artists began posting their sketch cards as they were approved...

All of the work posted by every artist who cared to share, was BEYOND impressive!!!

The variety of illustrations blew my mind knowing the limitations all of us artists had to work with...

Seeing the creativity that went into the sketch cards, inspired me to pose a couple of questions to all of the artists:

-WHAT WAS THEIR FAVORITE ASPECT OF WORKING ON THE SET?

-WHICH WAS THEIR PERSONAL FAVORITE SKETCH CARD?

-WHY?

Personally, My favorite aspect about working on this set is I've never illustrated characters like these before!

For me it was an entirely new experience in many ways...

Having a limited amount of references somehow inspired me more than EVER!

I wanted to make each illustration unique, so I completely trusted my instincts & creative flow...

I had so much fun experimenting!

As I had a deadline, I put myself on a schedule where I would do a specific amount of cards each day...

If I managed to get more done on any given day, then I was ahead of schedule & less pressure on me!

My favorite sketch card I illustrated was my first card I did! (Shown above), because I really let loose with the colors and I totally allowed myself to go somewhere NEW creatively, which basically set a precedence for the direction I wanted to go in with my other return cards on this set!

Below you'll find FEATURES of other artists who worked on the set & their responses to the questions I posed...

-Randy Martinez
-Layron Dejarnette
-Luis Diaz
-Jonathan D Gordon
-Scott Barnett

TOPPS TERMINATOR SALVATION MOVIE CARDS SET~ARTIST FEATURE RANDY MARTINEZ

I ASKED ARTIST RANDY MARTINEZ

WHAT WAS HIS FAVORITE ASPECT OF WORKING ON THIS SET?

This is what he said:

I had a lot of fun doing this set!

I did something I have never done while working on this set, I actually put the Terminator movies on while I worked, just to get in the mood. Funny, but it actually kept me excited!

Plus, working on yet another set with Denise across the hall working on her cards was my favorite part. Awwww! Ok, well, besides working on cards with you (don't I make you guys who hate mooshy stuff want to gag?

My favorite aspect of this set was the limited references. It was a great challenge and it really forced me to think outside of the box to make interesting cards. I like exorcising the creative side of my brain:)

-Randy Martinez

TOPPS TERMINATOR SALVATION MOVIE CARDS SET~ARTIST FEATURE LAYRON DEJARNETTE

I ASKED THE ARTIST LAYRON DEJARNETTE

WHAT WAS HIS FAVORITE ASPECT OF WORKING ON THIS SET:

This is what Layron told me:

My answer is similar to some of the others. I love the fact that we were able to really use our imagination and get creative with the sketch cards, due to the limited photo reference.

I did 100 sketch cards, along with 6 personal ones. I had a lot of fun using various styles and techniques on the rendering. On some cards, I really got into the detail and coloring.

This is my first sketch card set that I've done for Topps. In the past I've provided more detail illustrations for their "Garbage Pail Kids" and "Hollywood Zombies" trading card series.

I picked this card as my favorite because I like the contrast of the warm colors illuminating within the Terminator's eye to the cool colors and reflective light on the skull.

Layron DeJarnette

TOPPS TERMINATOR SALVATION MOVIE CARDS SET~ARTIST FEATURE LUIS DIAZ

I ASKED LUIS DIAZ

WHAT WAS HIS FAVORITE ASPECT OF WORKING ON THIS SET?

Here's what Luis said:

I think in general being able to work on a series for any Terminator Movie has to be the best thing and of course being able to draw and paint Terminator robots is a dream come true. This is the first sketch cards I prepared for and didn't leave to the last minute so I'm really proud of the work I did for these sketch cards.

One thing that was weird at first was the fact that the cards were grey so I was kind of unsure what was going to happen or what I was going to do. I'm use to fresh white ones and since I do most of my sketch card art with watercolors I was a bit worried at first. LOL!

I knew it was going to be good with ink and pencil, but I later realized that it's a good middle ground for bringing in some bright highlites so I changed my approach some and used other painting techniques. I was able to finish early on my set which was the first time I have ever finished a sketch card assignment on time so that is another reason I enjoyed working on this series. So my recommendation to any artist: Start early, make a schedule to how many cards to finish each day, and try to do more than you plan to do each day. At the end you will not kick yourself or wish you were dead and above all you will have a good night sleep each night.

I chose this card as my favorite cause it has a similar feel to the crazy ending of the first movie that I felt was more horrific than the other 2 sequels. It also was one of my favorite clips in the trailers. Just thought
it looked super cool and wanted to translate that into a card.

-Luis Diaz

TOPPS TERMINATOR SALVATION MOVIE CARDS SET~FEATURE JONATHAN D GORDON

I ASKED JONATHAN D GORDON

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF WORKING ON THIS SET?

Here's what Jonathan said:

My Favorite Aspect of working on the Terminator Salvation set is that it is a Topps Set, I grew up on topps cards. My father and grandfather grew up on topps cards. So to be a tiny part of the topps history in any way is special. This is my favorite card I worked on. It was the first I did. t really was my favorite because it was my first and the least rushed. Every one after I started worrying about the deadline. It was cool the second I finished it I felt I was a part of the topps history. Unlike past sets I worked on some of these cards at L.A.D.D. (Lansing Area Drink and Draw) meetings with some of my best friends who are also pro comics artists. It is a different experience working in a collegial setting with artist you love and respect.

TOPPS TERMINATOR SALVATION MOVIE CARDS SET~FEATURE SCOTT BARNETT

I ASKED SCOTT BARNETT

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF WORKING ON THIS SET?

Here's what Scott said:

"My favorite aspect was seeing how creative I could be, given the limited amount of reference material. That, and now seeing how all these other talented artists handled the same challenge!

I don't have one single favorite piece from this set, but this one (shown above)! It is among my favorites because I felt I was successful in creating a mood with very little detail (the whole 'less is more' principle). Given that I took this frame directly from one of the trailers, I was quite surprised to see other artists do almost the exact same shot (and here I thought I was being so original! LOL)"

TOPPS TERMINATOR SALVATION MOVIE CARDS SET

At this moment, words can not even begin to express the excitement that has filled my heart!!!

I am TRULY grateful for all that life has bestowed upon me!

Creating is what I LOVE doing the most...

Someone once put it best in their review about me

"She is an artist who creates because it is a part of her being"...

PERFECT...I couldn't of said it any better!!!

I've had MANY other types of jobs, as I'm sure most artists have, but I am the happiest when I am creating whether it's through my music, my writing, my acting, or my illustrations...

When people love what I create, and embrace my art, for me that is yet another gift...

WOW, TRULY & THANK YOU!!! I am grateful!

I'll do my best to try to express my joy!

I was invited to do 106 sketch cards for Topps "TERMINATOR SALVATION" movie cards set.

Which was again, an honor for me!

We had a limited amount of references and not much time...

Yes, it was a challenge, but a GREAT challenge, and I was totally up for it!

Working under these circumstances really pushed me up to explore my creativity!

For this set, I received 6 return sketch cards of my choice, so I decided to illustrate my return cards first...

In doing my 6 return sketch cards, I wanted to make them really different & stand out from the other 100 sketch cards I was illustrating for the set...

I experimented with color & just flowed with an artistic idea I was feeling...and now I'm soooooo happy to see that 2 of my sketch cards I illustrated ended up on Topps Promo for the "TERMINATOR SALVATION" movie cards (shown above)

Stay tuned to find out about the other sketch cards I illustrated for this set!

"BE A SUPER HERO FOR BABIES" CAMPAIGN ~ PEOPLE MAKING A DIFFERENCE by Denise Vasquez

Steve Frank is what I consider the epitome of a real life, modern day "Super Hero"!!! During the day, he's hard at work running his very own "Farmers Insurance Agency" in Tacoma, WA...By nightfall, he manages to find the time to do work for charity!

When Steve contacted me about doing some sketch cards for his "BE A SUPER HERO FOR BABIES" Campaign, I had to find a way to not only be a part of what he is doing as an artist, I was also VERY inspired to help bring awareness to his cause!

I conversed with Steve Frank about all the wonderful things he's been doing and what led him to want to become a "SUPER HERO FOR BABIES"...

-So Steve, What inspired you to do this fantastic campaign for MARCH OF DIMES?

March of Dimes has their "Be A Hero For Babies" day every summer. I came up with "BE A SUPER HERO FOR BABIES". Although I do not read comic books anymore, I did grow up and I still appreciate comic art. I will buy a piece or ask for a commission here & there. So, to have artists, many of whom I loved growing up, help our is great. Basically with this campaign, I am riding the current sketch card craze. A lot of people collect them, so it seemed like a good fit.

-What led you to do charity work? Are you involved with other charities?

I have always been altruistic. I have done a lot of charity work. I own a "Farmers Insurance Agency" in Tacoma, WA and Farmers is the largest corporate sponsor of March Of Dimes in our state. I think March Of Dimes is a GREAT organization, of course, and to have such support from your company is a driving force. As far as other charities go, I sponsor a child in El Salvador through "Compassion International" (third child in over a decade; they grow up so fast). I hosted a local radio show for a bit that solely featured individuals and organizations that help our community, such as "United Way", "Humane Society", and "World Vision". Ultimately, I will help out as much as I can, whenever I can, if asked.

-Is this your first time doing this type of campaign for the "MARCH OF DIMES"? Have you done this in the past? What was the outcome?

This is the second annual "BE A SUPER HERO FOR BABIES" campaign. Last year was GREAT, but I learned a lot on how to improve this year. In the end, we had around 200 artists do sketch cards and/or donate items such as original art, sketches, comics, sketch books, prints, etc. I was able to raise over $4,000 just from the "SUPER HERO" campaign. I raised even more through other means. I wound up being the top fundraising "Farmers Insurance" Agent in the State of Washington last year and I was recognized by the Governor Christine Gregoire for the effort, which was nice.

-How many artists are involved to date? How many sketch cards have been donated?

I have about 120 artists so far this year. I will be pounding the pavement at the "Emerald City ComicCon" in Seattle on April 4th, so I should be able to get another forty or so artists to contribute. That was a big part last year. The sketch cards are rolling in, but based on the commitments I received from the artists, I can expect over 500 sketch cards. That is about 200 more than last year.

-How do you find the artists that are involved? Do you contact them directly or word of mouth? Or both?

Well, I have many do stuff at the "Emerald City ComicCon", but the bulk of it was through the internet. I essentially sent e-mails to many of them, unsolicited. It is a testament to a lot of these artists that helped without knowing who I was. It shows you there are a lot of good people out there. Then, word of mouth spreads like wildfire.

-You mentioned you are planning another campaign this summer, can you tell me more about that?

We will be doing a local auction featuring original artwork. Many of the artists who are participating in the sketch card phase are also contributing a bigger piece for this auction. That will be later in July.

-Are you still looking for artists? Where can they reach you?

We always appreciate the help! Any comic or sketch card artist can contact me at stevenlfrank@comcast.net Unfortunately, we can only use a handful of amateur artists. Most of the artists are published and professional. A big part of the success is the credibility aspect. I would love to have anyone help, but it seems to have a negative effect.

-Is there Anything else you would like to say Steve?

Thank you for asking me these great questions! The desire to help babies should be an innate characteristic, so I really appreciate EVERYONE who is a part of this. Keep an eye on my blog http://steve4mod.blogspot.com to stay posted on the artists involved and the dates of the auctions. Anyone who just wants to learn more about the MARCH OF DIMES or donate to them directly should go to http://www.marchofdimes.com

Personally, I am soooo impressed by all of the artists that have donated their work to such a wonderful campaign! I myself donated 5 full colored sketch cards to the campaign, but there is one artist in particular I selected to FEATURE here, as she is a "Super Hero" in her own right, helping to spread awareness to this campaign by posting all over the internet!

Jessica graduated from Arizona State University and has since done artwork for companies such as The Walt Disney Company, Lucasfilm Ltd, Topps, Upper Deck , DC and Marvel Comics...to name a few! For more information about Jessica, please visit her website http://www.jessicahickman.com

Jessica was kind enough to take a moment from her hectic schedule to speak with me:

-Jessica, is this your first time participating as an artist with the "MARCH OF DIMES" sketch card campaign?

Nope, I worked with them last year on the 5x5 cards

-How did you hear about the campaign? Were you contacted directly, or did you hear about it word of mouth?

I was contacted directly via e-mail

-How many cards did you donate?

Unfortunately, I'm only able to contribute 5 cards due to my schedule

-What other charities, if any have you participated in as an artist?

I donate artwork for auction every year at "Minnesota Fall Con" for the Lupus Foundation Of Minnesota

-What led you to do charity work?

I've just had people approach me and I support the causes

-How long have you been an illustrator?

Does "Since I was born" count :)

-Any upcoming events/conventions you are attending that you would like to promote?

Minnesota Micro Con is coming up at the end of April http://mncba.com

I'd like to thank everyone out there who is doing what they can to help make a difference! Together WE CAN!
