Pinoy 501st Relief Operations:

Please help the flood victims in the Philippines

Fellow 501st member Regina Layug contacted me asking for our help, she wrote:

"Friends in the Legion, we'd like to ask for your help to raise funds for the victims of tropical storm 'Ondoy' (international name Ketsana) here in the Philippines.

People very badly need food, clothes, medicine, etc., and relief efforts are progressing slowly because there's still so much mud and water in the streets. We're the bad guys who do good. Let's do some more good internationally. Please help, by either donating or spreading the word."

SPECIAL FEATURE 501ST INTERVIEW "IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MEMBERS" with TROOPER OF THE YEAR BARRY BENECKE by Denise Vasquez

ALL MATERIAL ON THIS WEBSITE ©2008/2009
By Denise Vasquez
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED

Through my eyes, I see EVERY member of the 501st as a hero!!!

I LOVE YOU ALL...

But there is one member who stands out!

Perhaps it's because I've never met anyone who would donate their kidney to help someone else....

That is, Until now!

Please allow me to introduce you:

Barry Benecke

"Trooper of The Year"

Barry Benecke is not only a member of the 501st Legion, but He is the epitome of Ghandi’s famous words & my favorite quote

“Be the change you wish to see in this world”

I contacted Barry about interviewing him for my 501st series “It’s All About The Members”, and he was kind

enough to want to share his incredible story...

-Barry, You were given an award for "Trooper of The Year" WOW! Would you mind sharing your

amazing story about what you did?

I was surprised and honored to be chosen as trooper of the year. I think it happened because my fellow trooper, Phyllis Schulte had nominated me on the legion level for Trooper of the month. I was ecstatic about getting nominated for that award. I had donated my kidney to a guy I met on-line through a Star Wars toy collecting forum known

as SirStevesGuide. I knew this person as "Tycho" on-line, and one day he wrote about his kidney health declining, he had PKD or "Polycystic Kidney Disease". After losing my mother to cancer in 2005, as well as Katie Johnson, the

daughter of 501st founding member Albin Johnson, my friend Mike Crawford, and my wife's Uncle Jim to different forms of cancer, I wanted to help if I could to try to make a difference, so I offered to be tested to be a living kidney donor. It took many years of testing, but on February 3rd of 2009, the surgery was a success! Then a fellow 501st member, Eric Seeman donated his kidney to a fellow Stormtrooper, Jeff Romanoff. Both Eric and I were given Trooper of the Year. Since then, "Tycho", or Josh as I know him now, and I are good friends, I try to keep in touch with him

once a week. He is doing fantastic, he is playing baseball again, and has got a new lease on life.

-How did you find out about the 501st?

When putting my armor together, I was looking on the internet for reference pictures of Stormtroopers. I came acros

s a site belonging to TK 604, Luis Boileve. While looking over the pictures on his site, I saw a small ad for "Got Armor?" shirts, I e-mailed the person known as Duffy, as I was working on my armor, so I was interested in getting a t-shirt.

When I got his answer, he asked "Are you 501st?". I had no idea what the 501st was, let alone there were other people out there who also wanted to dress up in Imperial "bad guys". Duffy wrote back and explained to me about the

501st, he put me in touch with the person to contact, and even drove out to my place to show me what a completed suit of Stormtrooper armor should look like. Then he invited me to an armor party where I was given advice and tips on how to finish my armor. It was a great experience, and I met a lot of really nice people.

-What inspired you to want to join?

Well, first it was just how friendly and fun some of my fellow members were to me even befor

e I had joined. Finding

people around my age who loved the Star Wars films as much as I did, opened up a whole new world for me. Then I came to find that they did a lot of charitable work. One of the events that I don't miss due to losing so many people I know to cancer, is attending the American Cancer Society's "Relay for Life". I drive to Normal, Illinois and get together

with my fellow team mates on the team "Imperial Walkers". The first year we got together in 2005, we made the front page of the paper because here were these costumed Stormtroopers walking and raising money for a great cause.

Evey year I have managed to raise over $1,000.00, this year was my personal best, I raised a little over $1,600.00 and Team Imperial walkers each year raises over $3,000.00! My band of brothers!

-Which Garrison are you a part of?

I am part of the Midwest Garrison. When I joined shortly before the Star Wars celebration II held in Indianapolis, our garrison comprised of 5 states, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin and Ohio, since then several of the states got

enough members that they were able to break off into their own garrisons. Currently the Midwest Garrison is Illinois and Wisconsin. I am a proud member of the Midwest Garrison, and hope to be for a long, long time.

-When did you join? How long have you been a member?

I believe I joined in April of 2002, just shortly before Star Wars celebration II, held in Indianapolis, Indiana in May of 2002. SWCII was the first time I trooped with the 501st, I had just completed my armor in early April, and I wore it to the Wal-Mart where I worked. They had the toy release about a month prior to CII, and my manager was kind enough to let me wear my armor and greet costumers as they first came in. I got such a positive reaction, and I kept running into the restroom to look at my costume in the mirror, and I remember saying to myself "your an Imperial Stormtrooper", I was very excited . So I'm in my 7th year as a member of the 501st

-How did you decide on your costume?

Well, as a kid, I was around 12 when Star Wars Episode IV came out, and I remember getting so blown away when the Stormtroopers came barging on to Princess Leia's ship, I always wanted to be an Imperial Stormtrooper. Then I went to Wizard World in Chicago, I think it was late 2001, I went there because I had heard that Dave Prowse, Kenny Baker and Peter Mayhew were going to be there signing autographs. I went there when down one of the isles I see three people dressed in Stormtrooper armor, I remember my knees felt like jello, I felt like a kid again, seeing these professional looking Stormtroopers, but I was to afraid to go talk with them. I had seen the licensed costumes which where just fabric, and I was disappointed in those, so I spent some prior years dressing like a Jedi

-Where did you get your costume? Did you make yours?

Well yes, you could say I made mine, because a friend of mine sold me a kit. I had to put it together like a modeling kit. I was so nervous that I was going to mess it up, but over all I think mine came out very well. Also having many of the Midwest Garrison members willing to give me a hand in getting my armor together was a great help.

-Where have you traveled to participate in 501st events?

Like I mentioned earlier, I went to Indianapolis for celebration II, and downstate Normal for the "Relay for Life", I've also been to Chicago for several news broadcasts, as well as an event at FAO Swartz toy store, the Chicago walk for

hunger, as well as a few Cubs games. Also I've been to the Oakbrook Borders bookstore for several Star Wars authors book signings. Hey, if I can get dressed up as an Imperial bad guy, and people have a good time, then I'm all for it.

-Where’s the farthest you’ve traveled?

I would say Indianopolis. I wish I could go farther, but financially, I could not afford it. Also up until recently, I was

working 3 jobs. Trying to tell all of them that I needed a day or so off for an event was very hard to coordinate. I did wear my armor in St. Germain, Wisconsin, but it was just to show my brother, and wasn't an official 501st event.

-What’s your fondest 501st memory?

Probably attending Celebration II and just seeing all of these new friends come together in one mass gathering of Star Wars bad guys, plus I got to ticket check for the Indianapolis symphony orchestra. I was at the first door, and everyone had color coded tickets, if they had say "green" tickets, I would let them in, but if they had "red" or "Blue'

tickets, I had to direct them down the hall. Getting to watch the celebs walk by, then also being able to take in in the

concert, amazing. When they started playing some of John Williams masterpieces, I got goose pimples under my armor. Also that weekend, I got Carrie Fishers autograph! I was dressed up in my armor still after a morning photo shoot, and I waited in line for about 6 hours, but many of the fans around my were very cool, and got me something to lean on while I was enduring the long line. I don't know if you've ever had the chance to wear a set of stormtrooper armor, but it isn't one of the most comfortable things to wear for long periods of time. I have a lot of respect for the actors who donned the Imperial armor.

-What’s your favorite thing about being a 501st member?

I can't say I have just one favorite thing about being a member of the 501st. There are many things as a whole that go into what makes me proud to be a member of the 501st. The camaraderie for one, being with others who enjoy Star Wars, but also other wide array of topics, being able to party with celebs who were in the films, hey I got to party with Peter Mayhew, how cool is that? Also being able to bring a smile to a kids face, I remember we were at the Marcus Addison theaters for the midnight showing of Revenge of the Sith, and this small child with Yoda ears on,

comes up and held my hand and just stayed there for a long while. Also the fact that the theater owners were so cool to let us dress up and entertain the moviegoers, then we got to sit with the theater staff to watch the movie, it was just way to cool.

-What’s the day like for you as a 501st member preparing for an event?

I usually go through my tote to make sure all my equipment is there, I try to polish up my armor, shine my stormtrooper boots, make sure I have fresh batteries for my helmet. There is nothing like getting to an event, and realizing you left your body suit in the wash! There is also the process of registering for an event, which we do through the Midwest Garrison boards. This gives the coordinator of the event an idea of who is showing up and which costume they'll be wearing. I mean if you have 2 Vaders, or 3 Boba Fetts at an event, then it wouldn't go well. I have two costumes, I also dress as a Tusken Raider, much more comfortable then the Stormtrooper, but the kids tend to shy away for the most part, can you blame them though, those Tuskens are ugly and kind of scary looking no matter how

friendly you might be.

-Does the 501st have ranks or positions? Do you have duties you have to adhere to during events?

The 501st has many ranks, every garrison has a commanding officer, as well as several other posts. I don't really know to much about it, other than we get the chance to vote every year for folks who want to run for the position. I'm glad they are there, so we have someone to turn to if we have questions or concerns. The people who have been in the leadership roles for the MWG have done fantastic work, they are also the ones you would contact if you wanted to have some Stormtroopers at your event. I don't know about duties that I would have to adhere to, other than leaving my helmet on during an event, and no using foul language, as we are representing more then just ourselves, or our garrisons, we are representing this worldwide costuming club, known as the 501st, as well as the Star Wars movies, and George Lucas himself.

-Any upcoming events?

There is the Ron Santo walk for a cure coming up early next month, but I am still waiting to see if I get my scheduled day of request from work. I usually play it by ear, depending on what my work schedule is like, and I also got married in June of 2008, so now I have to take in to consideration if my better half has any plans for the dates of some of these events. So far she has attended 3 of the "Relay for Life" events with me. I got engaged to her at the 2007 "Relay for Life" in front of my fellow "Imperial Walkers" team.

-Anything else you would like to add?

I am proud to be a member of the 501st. They are a bunch of great people who do fantastic things to help raise awareness of worthwhile causes, raise money for charity, are willing to go out in all kinds of weather, I remember one time doing an event to promote a Star Wars game for a gateway computer store and it was over 100 degree's outside, at the time my armor was held together in many areas with Velcro, well the glue of the Velcro started melting as well as I was sweating underneath. The things you are willing to do endure being a member of the 501st.

Thank you Barry for being YOU & everything you do!

Your spirit, heart & soul is truly inspiring !

The world is a better place for having people like YOU in it!

INTERVIEW WITH 501ST HONORARY MEMBER MARY FRANKLIN by Denise Vasquez

"IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MEMBERS"

by Denise Vasquez ©2009

My series "It's All About The Members" began June 2009. If you'd like to go back & read past interviews, be sure to browse through the archives beginning with 501st Legion Founder Albin Johnson on June 14, 2009!

For this part of my series, I would like to feature 501st Honorary Member Mary Franklin

Artwork by Douglas A. Sirois and Edge of LA Productions

When did you first learn about the 501st?

When I was hired by Lucasfilm in 2001 to work on Celebration II. I started working with the 501st at that time because they had volunteered to work at the show in costume.

Did you know you were going to be inducted into the 501st?

Not a clue. It was the best surprise ever!

How were you inducted? Where?

The day after Celebration III, when we were closing down the show, at a pub in Indianapolis. I was so thrilled I refused to let go of the plaque. It sits in my window in my office now, so people can see it from outside, too.

Which Garrison Inducted you?

The 501st Council members who attended CIII. Damien Metz was my sponsor.

When were you inducted? How long have you been an Honorary member?

April 25, 2005

As an Honorary Member, do you participate in any 501st events? If so, Where have you traveled to participate in 501st events & what’s the farthest you’ve traveled?

Depends on how you look at it. If you count my work events, I have traveled all over the world for the events. Tokyo, London, LA….

What’s your fondest 501st memory?

The entire week of the Rose Parade in Pasadena. Of course the parade itself was quite a memory, but even more the week we spent all living, eating, rehearsing, and preparing together. I loved that there were troopers from all over, and they were all working toward a common goal. New Year’s Eve was especially memorable, with troopers toasting the New Year at whatever hour was midnight in their own country.

What’s your favorite thing about being an Honorary 501st member?

I get to be part of one of the coolest groups around, without really deserving it!

Do you where your badge at every convention you attend?

My badge sits here right on my desk, in my line of sight, so I look at it every day and smile. Unfortunately, I keep forgetting to pack it when I go places!

Do you plan on getting suited up?

As an event producer, I have to stay mobile, quick, and mostly out of sight, so a costume would not work for me. But if I ever did costume, I would be a Tusken Raider. They are the coolest aliens, and of course there is the Bantha Tracks connection.

Any upcoming events?

Thousands!

Thank you very much Mary for taking the time to share with us! Stay tuned everyone for more interviews with 501st members, after all "It's All About The Members"!

My poem "WHAT IS LOVE" is the result of different types of love that I have lost & found. This poem is my response to the question commonly asked ..."What Is Love?"

I am a singer, songwriter, artist and poet who appreciates all of the gifts life has to offer, while grasping all the lessons to be learned.

I would like to dedicate this poem to my mom, who has inspired me to be all that I am: an artist with a dream of sharing my wisdom with the world.

"WHAT IS LOVE"
by Denise Vasquez ©2001

What is love
Is it just a four letter word
I know it's something more
It's held deep within
Concealed behind a door
Love is complication
It seems at many times
Unlike music
You can't read between the lines
Like lightning that strikes
When unaware
Love is life
It's not always fair
Love is the sun
Giving Light
To our darkest days
Love is occurring
In many different ways
Love is the rain
That helps a flower grow
Love is the feeling
That helps someone to know
What is love
I found it within
You

501ST LEGION~ IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MEMBERS by Denise Vasquez ©2009

ALL MATERIAL ON THIS WEBSITE COPYRIGHT 2008/2009 BY DENISE VASQUEZ. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED

I’ve been writing a series of interviews about members of the 501st called “IT’S ALL ABOUT THE MEMBERS” here in my “Art & Soul” blog since June 14, 2009...

I got the idea of starting this series after speaking with 501st Legion founder Albin Johnson in Japan during Star Wars Celebration Japan...

Hearing Albin's story, and learning about how the 501st came to be, really touched a place close to home for me, and deep in my heart...

I’ve been interviewing 501st members worldwide since then, sharing & promoting their stories. The series has been receiving a wonderful, positive response from members, fans, and friends all over the world! I’m very proud of all of the hard
work I’ve put into building something unique & special for the 501st & it’s members!

Let me introduce you to some wonderful members of the 501st who were kind enough to take a moment to share their stories...

TRACY WILSON

How did you find out about the 501st?

It was around 2005 or so, when I was doing an online search for Star Wars pictures. One of the links that showed up was the 501st Legion. I had never heard of the 501st until that very moment, and to me it was like striking gold. This was one of the coolest things I'd ever come across in a long time, and I made every effort to find out more abot this group.

What inspired you to want to join?

First, it was just the fact of owning stormtrooper armor. Granted, when I first saw Star Wars in 1977, I cheered for the good guys when the Death Star blew up. But actually owning a costume similar to those in the movies seemed like a very cool thing. Once I read more information about the charity side of the 501st, this inspired me

even more to want to join.

Which Garrison are you a part of?

I am a part of Star Garrison, Arkansas Squad.

When did you join? How long have you been a member?

I was officially accepted in 2006, and January will mark my fourth year. And it just gets better and better!

How did you decide on your costume?

There's just something about a stormtrooper. I can't quite put my finger on it, but there's a cool-factor, and

maybe a slight hint of intimidation there as well when it comes to this particular character. Granted, they couldn't hit anything... but being in the white, shiny armor seems to draw a lot of attention no matter where you are. Besides, at the time it was the cheapest costume I could afford.

Where did you get your costume? Did you make yours?

I was very fortunate when it came to acquiring my costume. This goes back to the day when I was online, looking up information. Once I found out the requirements to join the 501st, I made several frantic calls of friends and co-workers. asking them if they knew anyone who had a stormtrooper costume. After it seemed I had ran out of options, the last call lead to one person. I called him up, and we talked for about two hours. I then came out and asked him if he'd be willing to sell his armor. We negotiated a price, met up a few days later and now.... the rest is history. Of course, he wasn't a Legion Member and the price was a lot less than what they cost. Of course, I had

to make sure my wife was okay with this, and she said that this would be my Christmas present.

Where have you traveled to participate in 501st events?

Majority of the events I've attended are locally such as Little Rock, North Little Rock, Sherwood, Conway and Hot Springs. I've also attened two events in Jonesboro, which is a two hour trip from Little Rock. Hopefully, we will be able to do more events in Arkansas that are spread out.

Where’s the farthest you’ve traveled?

Dallas, Texas for an annual Con called All-Con. This is a yearly convetion hosted by Star Garrison. This is the one Con I always try to make!

What’s your fondest 501st memory?

Trooping All-Con. To me, this is always like a family reunion. I get to troop a great con with some really awesome people! My second fondest memory would be the first time I had the armor on. This was December 2005 for our local Toys for Tots drive. I wasn't official yet, but it was an event I wanted to do with two members- Henry and Julia McDonald- that I had talked to over the phone but had yet to meet. Doing a parking lot change for the first time, and donning the armor for the first time was quite and experience to say the least! Not to mention, that

almost every step I took, a piece of armor would come apart or fall off completely.

Thankfully, Julia had a lot of duct tape handy that day!

What’s your favorite thing about being a 501st member?

Belonging to a wonderful group of people who share the same interests, love of Star Wars and giving back to the community. It's an amazing experience, and everyone treats you like family.

What’s the day like for you as a 501st member preparing for an event?

Even though each and every event is different, I am always excited to put on the armor and do an event. Maybe a little nervous still, hoping that everything goes right and if there are any armor malfunctions, it's minimal. Other than making sure everything is in order before the event starts, I do my best to take care of those in costume- making sure they're okay and if they

need a break.

Does the 501st have ranks or positions? Do you have duties you have to adhere to during events?

Our command structure is comprised of elected persons, voted into each position. It varies from Legion Commanding Officer, Detachment leaders, merchandise officers... all the way down to garrison and squad levels. At this time, I am the current squad leader for Arkansas, which covers handling events on our local level and making sure things run as smooth as possible.

Any upcoming events?

September 26th- North Pulaski Community Fest

Boo at the Zoo, Little Rock- which usually occurs in the last weeks of October.

November 13th-15th: Little Rock GameCon

March 12-14th- Allcon in Dallas, TX

Anything else you would like to add?

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all my brothers and sisters in the 501st. Regardless of where we come from or what we do, we take care of each other like family. From Albin down to my garrison and squad mates, and to all our Honorary Members and Friends of the Legion- I have enjoyed the ride so far and I look forward to many more years to come. For the Empire!

Thank you Denise, for your time and this interview.

BJ POWER

How did you find out about the 501st?

I met some 501st members at Celebration 2. I thought it was cool but had not been chomped on by the costume bug at that point in time. It was the line party for Episode 3, Revenge of the Sith when I met a local 501st member who was in charge of starting up our local fanforce. From that point I had a group of fellow Star Wars junkies to hang out with and one thing led to another. I traded in my Jedi, well not really, I joined Rebel Legion with it after a lot of work, and got my first 501st costume, a female Tusken Raider.

What inspired you to want to join?

Mostly all the stuff you saw the Legion involved with, like Make A Wish, Children's hospitals... that sort of thing. But, also they were a great group of fans and I just wanted to be a part of it.

Which Garrison are you a part of?

Star Garrison

When did you join? How long have you been a member?

I joined the Legion in the Spring of 2007 and have been a member since.

How did you decide on your costume?

My first costume was because I found a female tusken mask and really liked the idea of being a Sand Person. Then I went on to get my first armor kit... and then several other costumes. Most noteably my Gamorrean Guard. There are very few Gamorrean Guard's in the Legion and I'm the only female... I just really thought they were cool and wanted

something unique.

Where did you get your costume? Did you make yours?

I made my Tusken robes, not the mask. I assembled my Storm Trooper kits. The Gamorrean I bought complete. It's an old costume and I got it from Amsterdam. The folks who owned it before me don't know where they got it. But, I've made a lot of modifications on it.

Where have you traveled to participate in 501st events?

Texas, Tennessee, California.

Where’s the farthest you’ve traveled?

California for Celebration IV.

What’s your fondest 501st memory?

Trooping for a Make a Wish event where the little boy was getting a wish granting party. It's those moments that make

it more than just having a good time. We do have a great time, don't get me wrong... but, it's little moments like that when you can make a difference in a family's life at times when they are going through something more difficult than I can imagine. It's making their time more memorable.

What’s your favorite thing about being a 501st member?

Being able to be apart of moments like I mentioned above... and hanging out with the greatest bunch of fans you'll ever meet.

What’s the day like for you as a 501st member preparing for an event?

The day is normal as any other... but, for me... it's the getting into the costume that's the hard part as often I'm doing that in a parking lot... That and making sure you get the battery out of the charger and actually into the camera.

Does the 501st have ranks or positions? Do you have duties you have to adhere to during events?

There are rank and positions like garrison and squad leaders. And during events it's not so much duties, it really

depends on the event.

Any upcoming events?

Yes, our squad will be appearing at the Little Rock Zoo for their annual trick or treat event, Boo at the Zoo. Then in November we'll be trooping the Little Rock Game Con and hopefully we'll have team for the Susan Komen Race for the Cure.

Anything else you would like to add?

I'm just glad somebody's looking at the female perspective... 501st is a lot of fun to belong to. At big conventions you can't find a better bunch of folks to hang out with. And there are so many opportunities to help out your local

community. You never know just how much your appearance in a costume can mean to a family. It's really humbling sometimes.

The Force Will Be With You, Always.

Barbie Usison Arbues

How did you find out about the 501st?

Every year since it started I have been a volunteer at the Oakland Holiday Parade. This was the first time I ever saw life size stormtroopers and realized there was a place for people like my husband ;)

What inspired you to want to join?

To be honest, my husband made me join. No really, I always attended events with him and one day he said, if you’re going to be here you might as well get dressed up and get credit for going.

Which Garrison are you a part of?

I am a member of the GGG or Golden Gate Garrison.

When did you join? How long have you been a member?

I officially became a member late 2006, but have been hanging around the GGG as a handler/ unofficial photographer since 2004... so technically you can say I’ve been around for 5years.

Where did you get your costume? Did you make yours?

Another member helped me make my first costume since I have no sewing skills at all… and now I somehow own 4.

Where have you traveled to participate in 501st events?

The farthest I have traveled and participated has been San Diego Comic Con.

Where’s the farthest you’ve traveled?

The guess the farthest I’ve traveled would be SDCC, but I did get to watch all the troopers march live in the Pasadena Rose Parade.. at 7 o’clock in the morning.. in the cold.. but it sure was awesome!

What’s your fondest 501st memory?

One of my most interesting events was one I wasn’t even in costume for. A few years back, the GGG was invited to help promote SW at a Raider’s game. I was 4 ½ months pregnant and was given the task of protecting the stormtroopers from overzealous fans, it was crazy but in the end I got to watch the game from the sidelines next to the Raiderettes. It was quite an experience.

What’s your favorite thing about being a 501st member?

I must say it’s for the kids. I attend all kind of events but my favorites include parades and those that benefit the numerous charities in our area.

What’s the day like for you as a 501st member preparing for an event?

Once again, being honest, I do nothing. My husband (TK1697) does all the prep work for me. He goes through my armor and makes sure nothing is broken and makes repairs for me as needed. On the day of an event, I am usually the navigation system and am responsible for getting us there on time and in one piece.

Does the 501st have ranks or positions? Do you have duties you have to adhere to during events?

Yes the 501st does have positions both at the local and international level; however I like to keep things simple and just enjoy myself… however I have been known to plan a few awesome parties in my time.

Anything else you would like to add?

Sorry this is kinda of late, life’s been pretty hectic lately but things are starting to fall back into place… pretty soon I hope to be back in armor and out with my fellow troopers.

Better late than never Barbie! Stay tuned for more wonderful interviews with 501st members!
