Lost City Radio Benefit for Artist Donald Cecil by Denise Vasquez

Art & design by Donald Cecil ©2009

The other day, my neighbor Avi

Knocked on our door

He invited my man Randy Martinez

And I to a very special show

At The "M BAR" in Hollywood, CA

The show Was a benefit

For the family of Donald Cecil

Don was the artist who did all the design

Associated with Avi's band

"Lost City Radio" EP "Bad Descions"

Art & design by Donald Cecil ©2009
Which they self released at the end of 09

Sadly, Don passed away suddenly on Nov 6th

The day after the release of the album

That bares his artwork

The benefit had a wonderful turnout

The gathering felt like a wonderful

Celebration of Don's life

During the benefit, The band

"Lost City Radio"

Played an incredible, heartfelt

Set that kept all of us in

The audience both captivated & entertained

I was able to

Capture the essence of emotion that was felt that evening

With my Canon Powershot SX20-IS

Here's some of my favorites:

After the show, I asked Avi to email me more details about the benefit

I'd like to share what Avi wrote me...

"Don was an amazing guy who donated his time and considerable gifts to our band freely and generously. He was one of those people who did what he did because he loved creating. Any personal gain was an afterthought.

This show was and our way of trying to give something back to him and his family. And it was a way to make a real and direct difference in one family’s life. All proceeds from the door as well as from merch sold that night will go directly to a trust fund established for the education of his two sons, Thomas and James.

We also were asking people to consider attending in spirit by sending their

cover charge directly to the family at:

Thomas and James Bull-Cecil
PO Box 2030
Thousand Oaks, CA 91358

Of course people are welcome to contribute more if they can, but we thought asking for donation that would be equal to what people paid if they attended the show was a nice low pressure way to handle it

We've also set up a merch store at

From today through Feb 5th all the proceeds from merch sales will be

donated to the Cecil Family as well.

We're also trying our best to share don's art with people as much as we can

Here's a link to his flickr site

Thanks so much!

Avi Glijansky

Black Maria Gallery: Dedicated to non-mainstream art, Black Maria focuses on works that reverberate with the shock of the new – not in a gratuitous sense, but in a way that initiates wonderment and self-reflection. The people behind Black Maria Gallery believe that thought-provoking art, whether it’s termed pop surrealism, avant garde, underground or subversive, has a hugely important place in civic and social discourse, especially in these times. Black Maria strives to become an organic bridge between both stateside and international artists and the public, by presenting art that’s approachable and affordable in equal measure. Black Maria strives to reach out to local artists and to help make gallery-going a revelatory and rewarding experience.

Denise Vasquez performing LIVE at The NAMM Show 2010 with a BROKEN THUMB photos by Jim Steinfeldt

I'm sitting here drinking my first cup of coffee for today...

My right hand in a cast...

My right thumb broken...

Trying to ignore the PAIN...

Yes, my writing hand, my drawing hand, my guitar strumming hand...

My livelihood!

I'm managing to type this with my left hand...slowly, but surely...

Can you see me sitting at my desk...

My right arm in a green cast, hanging in a sling...

While my pointing & middle fingers on my left hand race to type before I forget

what I'm thinking...

I find myself smiling right now...

As I sit here focusing on the positive things in my life

My man Randy Martinez & my REAL good friends...

ALL showering me with with love & light

I am grateful for this moment in a very challenging time!

I just received some of my favorite photographs taken

by Legendary Music Photographer Jim Steinfeldt

During one my performances

at The NAMM Show 2010

Here are some of my favorites by Jim Steinfeldt ©2010

Looking at these photos, I am still amazed about the power of the mind...

I performed in 3 shows

Played my guitar

With a broken Thumb

My strumming Thumb

All the while smiling

In those moments

I did not feel any pain

I was sooo determined to perform

I meditated

I was focused

I was happy

I was where I wanted to be

I did it!

I like what my friend author Janice Erlbaum
called me:

"Zen mistress of art!"
